On Monday, many students were left disappointed by the difficulty of the CBSE Class XII Physics question paper. Parents and students alike expressed concerns over the high level of difficulty, even for multiple-choice questions, which took up a significant amount of time. According to Physics teachers, students were extremely dissatisfied and demoralised after the examination. The lack of uniformity in the question papers from different regions is difficult to understand, as teachers teach according to the prescribed syllabus. Clear instructions should be given to teachers regarding what to teach and what not to teach, particularly if a JEE-level paper is to be set. Ultimately, it is the students who suffer and undergo mental stress, feeling cheated.

The Class 12 Physics paper was successfully administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India and abroad from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm (March 6, 2023). The exams took place in over 7250 centres throughout the country and 26 other countries.

Preliminary reports indicate that the CBSE Class 12 Physics paper had a moderate level of difficulty. Study-based questions were challenging, and some students found long questions to be directly from the NCERT books. Many students also noted that some questions they had learned in school, such as derivations, were not present in the paper. The exam was regarded as difficult due to the inclusion of non-straightforward questions, as well as the broad range of topics covered. With the paper being lengthy, it was a challenge to complete it within the allocated three-hour time frame.

According to the feedback from students, the CBSE Class 12 Physics exam paper was of moderate difficulty, with questions ranging from simple to slightly tricky but none being straightforward. Most questions required the application of concepts, and subject experts noted that the multiple-choice questions in section A were the easiest and most scoring part of the exam. However, the paper became increasingly challenging as students progressed through it. Although the long-answer derivations were directly based on the Physics NCERT textbook, the short-answer questions caused confusion among many students. CBSE Class 12 Physics Paper 2023 Structure

The CBSE Class 12 Physics exam consisted of five sections worth a total of 70 marks, and candidates were allotted three hours to complete it. The question paper was divided into five distinct sections, namely Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E. Candidates were given 15 minutes to read the question paper, during which writing answers was strictly prohibited. The exam comprised 35 compulsory questions.

Section A Contents

The initial section of the exam is entirely dedicated to Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with each question having four probable answers or options provided. Students are required to select a single answer from the given options. It is crucial to keep in mind that each MCQ has only one correct answer. These questions are relatively straightforward and brief, and ideally, candidates should aim to spend around one minute on each MCQ. 

Section B Contents

The second section comprises very short answer questions that usually require a response of one or two lines, with some answers possibly requiring two to three lines. To manage their time effectively, it is recommended that students spend no more than three minutes on each very short answer question.

Section C Contents

The third section consists of short answer questions that typically require responses of around 5-6 lines in length. As most of the questions in this section can be problem-based, it may take around 5 minutes to provide step-by-step solutions.

Section D Contents

The fourth section composes of long answer questions that usually need an answer of about 10 lines. Long answer type questions require a minimum of 10 minutes since these questions must have descriptive solutions with clear-cut steps. 

Section E Contents

The fifth section of the exam comprises case-study questions that necessitate around 10-15 minutes to formulate appropriate responses. The answers to the case-study questions must have a comprehensive and detailed structure, encompassing both descriptive and numerical solutions.

Many students find Class 12 Physics exams challenging due to the subject’s vast syllabus and complicated derivations found in the NCERT textbook. However, with sufficient planning and focused attention throughout the academic term, students can gain a solid understanding of the subject and develop an interest in it.
